I use Gateway IP Monitor to keep track of several PC's on my "network of users" so that in the event of trouble I can visit these PC's via pcAnywhere.
Most of these PC's work with no trouble at all. But one connected to a Verizon FIOS network refuses to pass the Authenitication test. This PC is a Windows XP unit, with all service packs and updates installed. He runs the Windows Firewall, and AVG ( version 8) Antivirus Software.
I have tried several times to configure the "Authentication window" with the proper ID and Password and always get the error " 535 5.8.9 Bad Username or password - Authentication failed". I have even left these fields BLANK as I do with Road Runner Accounts ( which works on RR) and still get errors.
The ID and Password are exactly what I use in Outlook 2003 to sign on to this account for sending and receiving Email.
I suspect this is because Gateway IP Monitor doesn't support SMTP authentication protocols that the Verizon FIOS server implements. Gateway IP Monitor (the latest version) currently supports the clear text (AUTH LOGIN) and MD5 (CRAM MD-5) authentication protocols.
If you are not running the latest version then I would recommend upgrading, otherwise I would recommend using a different SMTP service. You shouldn't actually have to use the one offered by Verizon, if they are not blocking outgoing port 465 (SMTP over TLS) then you should be able to use GMails smtp server for example.
OR Hotmail.... Thanks Ingmar. That answers the Question... I'll give it a try....
By the way I AM using version 1.40.... I forgot to mention this in my origional request for help.... Any chance adding SMTP service in the future.? (To avoid confusion)
NEW error... When I changed it to a Hotmail account using smtp.Hotmail.com I get The remote host is Invalid (0.0.0.0) I read that they are now using LIVE.COM so I changed the SMTP server to smtp.live.com Now I am getting the error.... "530 5.7.0 Must issue a STERTTLS command first" This happens whether I use an ID and Password for the account or not. Now I am reading on the Hotmail site that Hotmail (live) accounts need an Encripted Connection SSL. Did I pick another UNUSEABLE mail account.?
Sorry for the long delay in replying here. I stopped receiving notifications from forum replies for some reason. Yes, it seems as if you did indeed pick another "unusable" account, at least in regards to what Gateway IP Monitor supports :-).
This is actually a bug that we can fix, and I will put in a request for Gateway IP Monitor. There are actually two ways of starting a TLS/SSL connection, and Gateway IP Monitor only supports the default at this point, and not the one from hotmail apparently.
I will post an update here when we have a fix for that.
HI, Can you please let me know if this issue will be resolved.
i've used Gateway IP on a relatives PC for years. They know nothing about PC's, often need help and call me. I'm 3 hrs away and only visit 3 times a year, or so. So using Gateway IP Monitor was a really handy utility as i always had their IP available for when that call comes in. I could then remote right in and fix whatever.
One day, about a year ago, (after installing Win XP SP3), i also started getting the same error from Gateway IP Monitor. Nothing i did worked to fix the issue. The utility would not connect to Verizon's email servers.
Longer story shorter... sounds like this is a known issue dating back to 2008 and i'm wondering if this will be fixed.
If not, can you better explain about using a different email address/server?
I use Gateway IP on my home pc to email my IP to my work email. I use Ameritech.
Are you saying i can use the same server settings on my relatives pc's to send out updates, that i use on my own, even though they are on a different network?
