I assumed that simply by doing a default installation of the product on a workstation, I would automatically begin to receive notifications about ALL events of a particular severity level recorded in selected logs. I chose to see Warnings and Errors in the Application and System logs. However, I am not seeing Desktop notifications for several types of events, even though that is the selected notification method. Events being recorded but producing no popups include those triggered by VSS, Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service, VolSnap, TCPIP, Service Control Manager, Server, Removable Storage Service, Ftdisk, e1express (indicating that the ethernet link has been disconnected), disk, and DHCP.
In addition, Event Sentry's own warnings about low disk space and other warnings are being recorded in the Event Log, but not flashed on the desktop.
Instead of operating as I assumed, is the product designed with default settings so that NO events are monitored unless the source/event ID/etc. is specifically identified and selected for inclusion? If not, there must be some simple setting I've not enabled that is causing the problem. Please let me know what could be causing this situation.
Hi Jeff,
When using the 'Desktop' action, please make sure that the EventSentry management console is running (in a minimized state) as this is required to use the desktop popups.
Yes, by default EventSentry is configured to notify you of Warnings and Errors, so you should be able to receive those without an issue.
Thanks for your response. The installation created a Startup item with this command string: "D:\Program Files\EventSentryLight\eventsentry_gui.exe" /hide." The properties of EventSentry_GUI.exe indicate that its public name is "EventSentry Management Console." It is set to "minimize to the tray."
So, that icon, and the EventSentry service, have always been running during the periods when the events have not been reported. Is there supposed to be a difference in functionality between times when when EventSentry is running in the tray, and when it is running minimized as a button on the taskbar?
Hi Jeffrey,
Let's start from scratch then. First, are you getting any other notifications from EventSentry - e.g. via email, or do you only intend to receive notifications to the desktop? Please keep in mind that desktop notifications are temporary only at this point, they automatically disappear after a few seconds.
In the management console, please locate the "Desktop" action and select it. There, you should see a "Test" button. Please click it and see if a test desktop notification appears.
Then, right-click that action and select "show filters referencing this action". In the next dialog, click find. You should see at least one include filter with the proper rules that will send events to that action.
Finally, under Tools->Options in the General tab, please make sure that the desktop notification is enabled under "Tray Area Notifications".
I hope this helps.
Thanks for your ideas, Ingmar. Before seeing them, I decided that the best thing I could do was to create a new baseline, by uninstalling and then reinstalling. I did that, and since then I've been receiving all notices on the desktop as I wished. I'm not sure what went wrong the first time, but now the settings match those that you describe. I have no idea what they were during the original installation. I now pronounce myself past this hurdle.
It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
