The following problem occurred during my original installation of EventSentryLight 2.92.0.11 on Windows XP SP3. It has persisted following uninstallation and reinstallation of the program.
Upon every system boot, EventSentry pops up an error message within 20 seconds of loading, and displaying its icon in the system tray. The Title Bar for the error window reads: "Unable to access www.eventsentry.com site." The error message itself reads: "There was an error downloading the latest version information from the www.eventsentry.com web site. Please make sure that you have access to the http://www.eventsentry.com/support_versioninfo.php page."
I confirmed that I do have access to that page through my browsers. It only displays a few characters, with the latest released version number. I have both hardware (router) and software firewalls installed. Both are set to log blocked events. There is no record of blocking associated with this occurrence.
I found no information about the cause or cure for this error through Google. I'd appreciate any information or suggestions.
Hi Jeffery,
From the Management Console please select 'Tools -> Options -> Proxy & URLs' and make sure you have any necessary proxy settings defined, or if Internet Explorer is working correctly on that system, you should be able to select the 'Use Internet Explorer Settings' option to make sure that the eventsentry_gui.exe has proper access to that page.
With your software firewall you will also want to make sure that the 'eventsentry_gui.exe' has permissions to check the 'www.eventsentry.com' website.
Steve, there aren't any proxies needed for me to connect with the EventSentry site, but there was a problem with the software firewall. When I set Comodo to specifically let eventsentry_gui.exe make that connection, the problem went away.
Although I was glad to see the problem go away, I was sad to see what had been the cause. As I said in my initial post, "Both [hardware and software firewalls] are set to log blocked events. There is no record of blocking associated with this occurrence." So, now I know I can't trust my security logs--not a happy thought.
Anyway, thanks very much for your help.
You're quite welcome, we're glad to hear that it's working now. You would need to contact the vendor of your software firewall software to fix this issue. Your hardware firewall is probably working fine, since it was already blocked on your computer it probably never got to the hardware firewall.
