EventSentry 2.92 uses SysWOW64 for temp, log files
  • John Wells January 4

I recently upgraded to EventSentry 2.92 light on Server 2003 x64. After this BackupExec started warning of files in Windows\SysWOW64\eventsentry\temp that couldn't be backed up. I see there's also an eventsentry\log folder there.

Why aren't temp and log files being stored under All Users\Application Data, rather than Windows\System32 or SysWOW64?

    Hi John,

The temp and log files were placed in those directories by the developers so they could be easily found for troubleshooting purposes. Quite often these files are used by the support team and developers to help diagnose problems with the end users configuration. This allows us to tell the end users to ZIP up the entire directory and send it to us without having to worry about getting data (sometimes confidential data) from other programs that should not be sent to us.

    Hi John,

A little more background. Thus far we chose this approach mainly to keep all the EventSentry-related files in one place. Since the debug log files are limited in size, there really shouldn't be any drawbacks from having the logs in that directory. The same goes for the temp files, which like Steve mentioned, but those may also contain confidential information. So keeping them all in a directory that we have control over, seems like a sensible thing to do.

The reason why BackupExec is complaining is because the agent is locking some of the temp files. The best approach as such would be to exclude this directory from BackupExec.

We do appreciate your feedback though, we'll keep that in mind for the future. We do have plans to move the installation directory for the agent to Program Files directory.

I hope this explains and makes sense.

    Ingmar.
